How we are organized
We are based in Sydney and currently have five regional groups:
    •  City and East
   • North Shore
    • North Western
    • South Western
    •  Greater Western

Each group responds to the special needs of its teachers by organizing its own  events. On joining the association, teachers nominate which region they and their students will be in.

The central committee of UMT consists of representatives from each group, with possibly other co-opted members. It organizes the prestigious Roger Woodward Scholarship Awards program, as well as the UMT Awards for younger students.

Members are welcome to attend committee meetings and to become involved in planning, organizing and running events. We welcome feedback which will help to improve the organization.

Our History
UMT began in 1975 as part of Roger Woodward’s vision for Australian music. He organised Youth Rostrum (as part of Music Rostrum) , a remarkable series of concerts, master classes and lectures by key international musicians. This inspired hundreds of teachers to join together to continue Woodward’s work in creating stimulating educational and performing opportunities for themselves and their students. This group was called Music Teachers for Youth Rostrum (coordinated by Nancy Salas), becoming UMT in 1978.

Since then, UMT has organized hundreds of events. These have included concerts ranging from informal sessions at local venues to performances at the Opera House. Lectures, workshops and master classes have covered topics as diverse as Baroque dance, overuse injury and teaching the AMEB Musicianship syllabus. Scholarships and awards have provided incentives for young performers who audition at the local level to represent their region at the finals.
